Blizzards have long been part of Minnesota’s climate, especially in the western prairie ecosystems. Many pioneer newspapers, diaries, and letters contain stories of blizzards and their impact on Minnesota communities. In the early days of statehood there was no National Weather Service system in place to warn citizens about impending blizzards and dangerous storms. Stories of survival abound. Further, our historic climate observations well document blizzards in terms of speed, intensity, duration, and impact. All of these topics will be discussed in this presentation by Dr. Mark Seeley!
